ECAREA Unit Meeting
Lake Street Methodist
April 4, 2011
10:00 a.m.

The meeting began with Chris welcoming everyone and leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Visitors and first time attendees were introduced. 40 people were in attendance.

Business Meeting

A. Minutes: The minutes from the March Unit meeting were approved and will be recorded as submitted by Sally.

B. Treasurer: Owen thanked Chris for announcing the budget reports while he was away in Florida for the winter. He reported that we have a balance of $2115.19 in the checking account and $1656.30 in the savings account at this time.

C. Committee Reports:

Social: Loreen thanked the Lake Street Methodist ladies for serving a delicious brunch this morning. She shared that our May 3rd meeting will be at Grace at 1:30 p.m. and the June 6th luncheon with the Chippewa group will be at KD’s Eatery in Mondovi at noon.

Membership: Kathy reported that 93 people signed up to become State members at the Retirement Planning session. She asked that we all encourage people to attend and become members of ECAREA as well. The registrations procedures for next year will be the same this last year as it worked out very well. Reminders of that will be in the August newsletter.

Legislative: Joan read to us sections of President Berland Meyer’s article in the March WREA News comparing a Defined Benefit Plan, which is what we have to a Defined Contribution Plan such as a 401(k) or 403(b). She also invited us to read the many newspaper clippings she had set out for us about the Budget Repair Bill, and encouraged everyone to go and vote in the important election tomorrow.

Past President: Cathy had no news to share.

Health and Education: Marlaine told a joke to heighten our spirits in lieu of the disheartening news in the paper and on TV. recently.

President: Chris shared Jane Elmer’s comments from the most recent March 24th Capital Happenings in relation to the proposed Budget Bill. She reminded everyone of the excellent website the WREA has and encouraged us to go there to read the updates.

Newsletter: Jeanette was absent.

Website: Cheryl had nothing to share.

Bottle caps/labels: Carol reminded everyone to continue to bring in bottle caps etc.

D. Old Business

1. With this being our 3rd or 4th year of holding the Retirement Planning session we would have expected about 50-60 people to attend. There were 80 people registered and 150-160 actually attended.

2. We now have three people registered to attend the WREA State meeting at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake on May 10-12. Anyone else interested in attending was asked to talk to Chris or another Board Member.

E. New Business

1. The Excellence in Education Banquet was on the agenda, but was not discussed.

F. Raffle

Cathy conducted the drawing and reminded members that half of the money goes to the WREA Foundation to provide for scholarships and grants.

The business meeting was adjourned for the program.

G. Program

Carol introduced Betty Cowley, a retired teacher and author, who shared her living history enactment of Mary Todd-Lincoln.

Respectfully submitted by Sally Gordon, Secretary.
