ECAREA Eau Claire Area Retired Educators

Minutes of ECAREA Meeting
February 6, 2012, 1:30 PM
Grace Lutheran Church

The meeting was called to order by President Chris Kondrasuk. There were 34 members in attendance.

Secretary Sally Gordon was absent due to family illness and the minutes of the past meeting were approved since there were no corrections.

Treasurer Owen Moyer was absent due to travel. The report he submitted was ___ as of Dec. 31, 2011.

Social Co-chair Loreen Yager thanked the serving committee:, Donna Kraemer, Bill Benson, and Diane Powers. The committee for our March meeting is: Pat Tompkins, Joan Cook, and Alice Ridge.
Loreen reported that 32 games were delivered to Manz School as a result of our Christmas donations. Several thank you notes from Manz were passed around the group.
Our March meeting will be a Grace Lutheran Church at 1:30. Justin Newcomb will present the program “Refuse to be a Victim.” Our April meeting will be at Lake Street Methodist. The 10AM brunch will cost $ 9.00. The May meeting will be a 1:30 meeting at Grace. Our June meeting will be a $10 luncheon held at KD’s restaurant in Mondovi.

Joan Cook, Legislative Chair, was not present but Chris Kondrasuk presented a brief update concerning the SWIB trustee appointments. The Governor named three potential trustees to be approved by the state legislature. One of the appointees was thought to have a conflict of interests and he withdrew his name. This decision was welcomed by the WREA. The remaining two appointees are expected to be confirmed this spring.

Joan has also asked Chris to announce that voter ID cards can now be obtained at the State Office Building on Clairemont during working hours on Tues. and Thurs.

Chris mentioned that the ECAREA Board will begin working on next year’s programs very soon. If anyone has any program to suggest, they should speak to a Board member.

Our volunteer hours totaled 6,808.5 this year. Good job!

There will be a retirement planning session on Tues., March 13, from 4-5:30 PM at Memorial High School. Roger Byers, former ETF counselor will once again present this session. Please encourage friends contemplating retirement to attend this free seminar. It is open to anyone who is part of the State of Wisconsin Employee Trust Fund. Registration is required and free.

Jeanette Scheuermann reported that she mailed out 120 copies of the newsletter. The newsletter cost $75 for this issue..

Jeanette also asked for someone to take over the unit scrapbook.

Cheryl Poss encouraged people to check out the unit website. She asked that people consider writing a brief description of interesting trips or recommending a good book. This can be done by clicking on the “Contact” link in the right hand margin of the homepage of the website.

Carol Friday reminded members of our campaign to help our local schools through collecting Campbell soup labels, milk Moola strips, Boxtops for Education, and empty printer cartridges. Bring these items to our meetings.

Members please consider joining our ECAREA Board. It is an interesting position that requires a very minimal time commitment. If you are interested, consider joining us for a meeting at Northwoods Brew Pub on the third Monday of the month at 9AM. We have a brunch meeting which is usually done by 10:30. Another opportunity to learn about our state organization is to attend the state meeting which is held for three days the first week of May. This year the meeting will be in Appleton. Typically most expenses are paid by the unit.

The meeting was adjourned.

Dr. Ron Heilman, superintendent of the Eau Claire Area School, spoke with us. He opened his presentation with a brief description of the new Mission and Vision Statement of the school district. He answered my interesting question from our members. We really appreciated being able to visit with him.

Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Hoffman, Past President
In the absence of Sally Gordon, Secretary
