ECAREA Unit Meeting
Paul Bunyan Camp at CV Museum
                                            8/25/2014 at 1:30 p.m.




The meeting began with Chris welcoming everyone and leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Visitors and first time attendees were introduced.  ____ people were in attendance. 

Business Meeting

A.  Treasurer: Judy reported that as of today we have a balance of $1296.54 in the checking account and $1656.70 in the savings account. 

B. Committee Reports:

Social:  Loreen passed around a sign-up sheet for the brunch meeting on October 6th.  She will need reservations/cancellations to be made no later than October 2nd.  The cost will be $12.00.  Chris shared that Dave Bennett will be our speaker that day.   

Membership:  Ruth thanked everyone who sent their membership registration to her earlier in the mail.  She announced that as of today we have 47 members.  She encouraged everyone to invite newly retired or past retired teachers to join.

Legislative:  Owen shared that there are no legislative alerts due to their adjournment.  He also addressed the performance of the W.R.S. and the upcoming elections in the fall.  He encouraged all members to join the WREA to support their watch-dog efforts of our retirement fund.  He also asked for help in this committee, especially during the months of Jan., Feb, and March when he travels south. Owen’s notes are attached.
Chris Hambuch-Boyle shared that WASB.org lists all of the candidates and information about each of them.  The League of Women voters also provides this information at the public library. Chris invited everyone to attend the ECAE meeting on September 11th at the Senior Center where Dan Van De Water will talk about the Eau Claire school budget.

Past President:  Cathy encouraged everyone to write legibly on their membership form to insure that she can read their email address and thus receive her monthly email to them.  She also reminded members of the sign-up for the Chippewa Valley Learning in Retirement workshops taking place a Peace Lutheran Church on 8/26/14. 

Health: Marlaine shared information from the June issue of Prevention magazine on the benefits of yoga.

Education: Carla made reference to her article in the newsletter in relation to Governor Walker wanting to repeal the Core Curriculum State Standards.  She also mentioned an article in Time magazine where other states are voicing problems as well.      

Newsletter:  Jeanette was absent but extra newsletters were passed around to anyone who didn’t receive one in the mail.

Website:  Cheryl was absent.  Chris reminded everyone of the www.ecarea.org website and encouraged members to look there. 

Bottle caps/labels:  Carol shared that she delivered 1621 items to the 1t grade at Sherman Elementary.  She thanked members for contributing and encouraged everyone to bring in the boxtops in a timely manner as some of them expire.  Chris stated that Eau Claire was mentioned in the WREA newsletter for conducting this project.

C.  New Business

            1. Chris shared that she and Loreen will be attending the State WREA convention in Middleton on September 23-24.

            2.  Chris encouraged everyone to pick up the half-sheet program slip that outlines our meeting dates, locations and presenters for the year.

            3.  Chris stated that the Challenge Award Program will focus on elementary schools this year.  She encouraged members to notify elementary teachers of the Nov. 1-Feb. 1 application window.  $2000.00 will be awarded to five elementary schools in the State in April 2015.

D.  Raffle

Kathy conducted the drawing and reminded members that half of the money goes to the WREA Foundation to provide for scholarships and grants.
           

The business meeting was adjourned for the program.

E.  Program

Greg Devine, a volunteer at the Chippewa Valley Museum gave a presentation and a tour of the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp.
